Blueberries redefine perceptions of Tulbagh Valley’s output

The Tulbagh Valley is renowned for its wine and stone fruit production. Five years ago, its potential for blueberries was recognized, a process in which Waterstone Berries has taken the lead with 130 hectares of blueberries, with the final phase of planting scheduled for next year, the company says. "A combination of varieties is planted with ongoing trials of new varieties. We expected to improve our yield by 20% compared to last year."

"The first harvest in 2022 marked a turning point, which confirmed the viability of the new crop but also showcased the exceptional quality of the berries," according to the management of Waterstone Berries. "Waterstone Blue Berry Farm is redefining global perceptions of the Tulbagh Valley's agricultural output, while simultaneously stimulating the local economy."

With the involvement and support of the Atoll Group as a shareholder, Waterstone plans to expand its annual volumes in excess of 4,000 tonnes to increase volumes in early production areas elsewhere in the country.

Waterstone Berries markets its own berries through its strategic partners in Europe. The Waterstone Berries brand has also earned a cachet amongst clients in the Middle and Far East, he remarks. "The season has been running normally, although when Peru's volumes enter the markets, it might impact and lower the market price."

Farm aims to foster sense of purpose
The farm aspires to be a catalyst for positive change, and it extends to every aspect of cultivation. "We have perennial cover crops in our orchards, forming part of biological pest management, as it creates a habitat for natural predators. It assists in minimising the amount of chemical applications."

An area of the farm demarcated as a wetland has been left untouched, while the management of waste and plastic strictly adheres to best practice.

"Sustainability and outreach initiatives are important contributors to community upliftment. By creating sustainable job opportunities for both permanent and seasonal workers, the farm has fostered a sense of purpose and progress throughout the Tulbagh Valley. This community-driven approach has spurred economic growth and provided vital support to local families."
