Fruits from Southwest China are entering the market in large volumes, quality remains stable

As autumn fruit enters its peak season, a wide range of varieties from Yunnan and Sichuan, the two major production areas in Southwest China, have entered harvest. While recent high temperatures have affected yields of certain varieties, overall fruit quality remains stable.

Hunan Dream of Fruit Agriculture Co., Ltd. currently exports blueberries, kiwifruit, and Papagan mandarin oranges to Southeast Asian markets such as Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore, as well as to the Middle East. According to company representative Manda, overall production of these three categories has remained steady this year, with sales growing rapidly and overseas market feedback proving highly positive.

Yunnan blueberries
With the blueberry season approaching, blueberries from Yunnan will begin to enter the market in November. Manda, head of marketing, said: "Yunnan is a premium producing region for fresh blueberries worldwide. Its climate is ideal, with large temperature differences between day and night, producing fruit with excellent color and firmness. Overall quality is generally superior to other regions." Manda explained that this year the company's planting area in Yunnan's main production zones has expanded to 200 hectares, with output doubling compared with the previous season.

In terms of variety, the company currently focuses on four main cultivars: M8, M9, L42, and Bianca, to meet the needs of different markets. "M8 has a rich floral aroma, pure sweetness, and high firmness, making it a premium product. M9 combines crispness and sweetness, with over 90% bloom coverage, making it highly marketable. L42 features large fruit with high sweetness, with diameters typically exceeding 20 mm and reaching up to 26 mm. Bianca, a new variety introduced this year, offers a purely sweet and refreshing flavor, with fruit diameters of 15 to 20 mm, and is expected to reach the market in December," said Manda. "For exports, we adapt to different market demands. Customers with strict requirements for size and flavor prefer M8, while L42 is favored in markets that demand large fruit. M9 and Bianca are more suitable for distribution channels, supplied as mass-market products."

Kiwifruits
Aside from blueberries, kiwifruit is another category that Dream of Fruit has cultivated for more than a decade. "Our red-fleshed kiwifruit, primarily the 'Donghong' variety, is sweet, juicy, and aromatic. Rich in vitamin C and anthocyanins, this year's high temperatures have led to slightly smaller fruit and some skin burns. However, thanks to the expansion of new production areas, overall production and quality remain stable."

In addition, this year the company has also launched a new yellow-fleshed variety, 'Yanhuang No. 8,' which is expected to be available at the end of August. "Our yellow-fleshed kiwifruit has an excellent flavor, and market feedback has been very positive," Manda said.

Papagan mandarin oranges
"Papagan mandarins have a thin, easy-to-peel skin, are seedless with a smooth, fiber-free texture, and are sweet without being sour. Their delicate flavor has earned high consumer acceptance," Manda continued. "Although weather fluctuations during the flowering period reduced yields in some production areas this year, overall production and quality remain comparable to last year."

"As a representative of Chinese citrus fruits, Papagan has seen strong growth in acceptance in overseas markets. Compared with other citrus varieties, Papagan has faced fewer barriers to entry and has quickly captured significant market share," Manda added.

At present, Dream of Fruit's main export markets include Hong Kong, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East. "This year, export volumes of our three core product categories have steadily increased, with sales accelerating compared to last year. While blueberry and Papagan prices are more affected by market fluctuations, kiwifruit prices remain relatively stable." Commenting on the current shipping market, Manda noted: "Fluctuations in ocean freight do have some impact on high-value fruits, but overall, they remain under control."

Since its establishment in 2016, Hunan Dream of Fruit Agriculture Co., Ltd. has integrated fruit cultivation, processing, sales, and operations. Annual sales exceed 120,000 tons, and its client network spans more than 3,000 wholesalers, supermarkets, and fruit chain groups across China. Currently, the company has developed a dual production base under the "Dream of Fruit" brand: the Yunnan region focuses on the blueberry industry chain, while the Sichuan region develops specialty fruits such as kiwifruit and Papagan.

Dream of Fruit will participate in Asia Fruit Logistica from September 3–5, 2025, at booths 3V42 and 3V44. "This is our second time participating in the exhibition," Manda said. "This year, we hope to engage in deeper discussions with more local importers with long-standing roots in the market. We also aim to use this platform to collect more information on logistics, products, and other supply chain resources."
