Nikki Rothwell named 2025 Cherry Industry Person of the Year

Nikki Rothwell, an Extension specialist with Michigan State University (MSU) and coordinator of the Northwest Michigan Horticulture Research Center (NWMHRC), has been named the 2025 Cherry Industry Person of the Year. The recognition was presented at the National Cherry Festival's Cherry Industry Program and Awards ceremony on July 3 in Traverse City.

The award acknowledges individuals who have made significant contributions to the cherry industry in roles such as grower, processor, educator, or advocate. Rothwell was nominated by peers and industry professionals in recognition of her work in research, grower education, and sector leadership.

Rothwell has been involved in Michigan's cherry industry for more than two decades, focusing on integrated pest management, climate adaptation, and orchard system research. One of her notable contributions is the development of a model to manage spotted wing drosophila (SWD), an invasive pest. This model integrates growing degree days and crop ripeness to guide pesticide application timing, reducing unnecessary sprays. According to MSU, the model has been widely adopted across the region.

Throughout her career, Rothwell has been involved in outreach through both in-person and digital platforms. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she launched a virtual Spring Tree Fruit Webinar series and expanded digital communication through weekly pest management newsletters and seasonal updates.

In addition to technical research and outreach, Rothwell has played a role in supporting the broader cherry industry. In 2024, she helped coordinate stakeholder meetings during a leadership transition at the Cherry Marketing Institute. Her work has also included initiatives focused on economic viability and grower wellbeing.

At the NWMHRC, Rothwell oversees research and public engagement efforts, including hosting more than 2,500 visitors during the National Cherry Festival each year.

Previous honors awarded to Rothwell include the Michigan Cherry Committee Distinguished Service Award in 2022 and the MSU Extension Meritorious Service Award in 2023.

The National Cherry Festival is held annually in Traverse City and includes events, parades, and agricultural programming, with the Cherry Industry Person of the Year award recognized as a leading industry distinction.
