There is optimism around this year's radish crop from Michigan, even following a cold, extended spring and an unusual subsequent weather pattern. "This past month has had an extended cold stretch, followed by a nice week of really hot weather, and then back to another 10-day cold stretch," says Jordan Vande Guchte of Superior Sales.
What this means is a slightly uneven start to this year's good radish crop from Michigan. The start is also later this year by about 12 days. "However, as we get beyond this, it should settle into a more normal season," says Vande Guchte. "Once we get this pipeline rolling, it should really take off to see pretty steady supply."
This follows a challenging 2024 Michigan radish season. "Last year we got quite a bit of rain. It hit heavily in June but then followed in waves," says Vande Guchte, adding that that weather impacted other vegetable crops out of the state along with radish.
Reflecting on 2024 season
That meant difficulties getting into the field given the fields didn't have time to dry out before another wave of rain hit last year. In turn, supply struggled to meet demand–the cello market, which is where most of Superior Sales' radish business is in, remained high and the bulk radish market was non-existent. This pattern continued until mid to late fall.
Right now, in terms of regions, along with Michigan, there are small pockets of production in the southeast and Florida could be winding down its radish season. Arizona has production in the offseason and Ohio also has production.
As for demand, Superior Sales has been increasingly focusing its radish business on programs. On the flip side to this steady business is in a year like last year where there are supply issues, which means less of a chance to pursue spot buying opportunities.
Looking ahead, along with radishes, the company will also be starting its Michigan production on cucumber, leafy greens, lettuces, some soft squash, and turnips.
