Lazy Foods, a producer of fresh guacamole based in Ridderkerk, the Netherlands, is making it easier than ever for consumers to enjoy their daily dose of avocado while also helping to reduce food waste. Since its founding in 2015, circularity has played a key role in the company's production of fresh dips and spreads, with avocado as the star ingredient. From the very beginning, "rescued avocados" have been used in the production of fresh guacamole.
Avocado lovers can now enjoy a delicious ripe avocado anytime, thanks to Lazy Foods' range of fresh guacamole and other avocado dips. Ron van der Vloed, managing director of Lazy Foods, explains: "Through new partnerships, we are now processing large volumes of fresh avocados that can no longer be sold because they're too ripe or not visually appealing to consumers. Currently, around 70% of our total production comes from rescued avocados as part of a residual stream."
"Almost every guacamole sold in Dutch supermarkets is made from imported frozen avocado cubes or avocado purée. These imported frozen products have a significant environmental footprint. By using this residual stream, we contribute to the transition to a circular economy and reduce our environmental impact. This way, we make fresh, healthy, and sustainable choices easy for everyone. We're proud to recover a high-quality product from this residual stream and have now reserved additional production capacity for a potential large customer. We've already started hiring new staff," said Ron van der Vloed.
