The previous year's apple inventories in Ukraine are nearing depletion, according to EastFruit analysts. With most orchard owners having liquidated their stores, remaining growers have escalated prices. Recently, apple prices surged by 14%, ranging now between 32-40 ($0.80–$1.00)UAH/kg.
The depletion of stocks and a delayed early harvest, attributed to a colder and extended spring, are driving these dynamics. Fresh apple supplies are not anticipated in the market for several weeks.
Experts highlight, "Prices are currently twice as high as a year ago, and further growth is expected until the new harvest arrives." In this environment of seasonal shortage, there is a growing demand for streamlined customs processes, particularly for export-bound goods.
An advancement for the Ukrainian apple industry was the opening of the Canadian market. As stated by the State Consumer Protection Service, since March, Ukrainian producers can officially export fresh apples to Canada. Compliance with the Export Program includes producer and packer registration, orchard oversight, phytosanitary inspections, and mandatory certification. Products must meet Canadian standards for pest and dirt protection and adhere to transportation regulations.
Despite burgeoning export channels, Ukrainian farms retain only 10-15% of the original season apple volumes. Oleksandr Nosov of Alma Fruit company reports that merely 20% of these apples are suitable for maritime export to destinations like Asia or the Middle East, while the remainder is destined for Europe.
This year's apple export volume declined threefold due to reduced yields caused by adverse weather events. Spring frosts and summer heat notably impacted produce quality, with the Gala variety, a primary export type, being most affected.
The Ukrainian apple sector is in a state of transition: The previous harvest is nearing exhaustion, new harvests remain pending, and prices continue to escalate. Expanding export avenues, particularly with the Canadian market entry, is gaining prominence. To navigate new logistical challenges, producers are increasingly adopting systematic approaches, including efficient customs procedures for goods.
