While the volume on California's stone fruit crop is reduced this year compared to 2024, the fruit's eating quality has proven to be better in 2025. "The start dates are also slightly sooner than last year but overall, they are very close to 2024's dates," says Kira Navison of Scattaglia Growers & Shippers (SGS).

On peaches, the Spring Flame 22 and Crimson Princess are being picked and packed throughout this week. "These early-season varieties are known for their vibrant color, sweet flavor, and firm texture. With consistent performance and early availability, it's a great way to kick off the peach season and drive sales. As we approach June, we'll start the June Time peach on 6/1 which appeals to traditional peach lovers as it delivers on both appearance and flavor and is considered a staple summertime variety," says Navison. Along with conventional stone fruit, SGS will also have an organic lineup available that will particularly appeal to health-conscious consumers.
Growing consumption of stone fruit
How about demand? "There was good demand for the 2024 stone fruit season although demand is currently outpacing last year," says Navison, adding that consumption generally is growing on stone fruit not only because of the fruit's health benefits but also its versatility and ability to be used in both sweet and savory dishes.

Following good growing conditions, stone fruit volume is expected to significantly increase in the weeks to come and there will be additional varieties available. "As the weeks go on, the flavor profile of our fruit will reach new heights," says Navison.
