Calderoni Company (Italy)

Biological weed management made easy, even on slopes

Thanks to technological innovations, it is now possible to perform biological weed control not only in flat fields but also in hilly and mountainous terrain. In countries like Italy, Spain, France, and those in Eastern Europe, orchards and vineyards are often located on sloped land, making weed management particularly challenging, especially when the use of chemical herbicides is not an option. The Italian company Calderoni addresses this challenge with Rampetta, an implement originally developed several years ago and since enhanced with significant technological upgrades. Calderoni showcased Rampetta and other related technologies at the recent trade fair Macfrut held in Rimini, Italy. The name Rampetta comes from the Italian term for "foot ramp," reflecting its ability to bridge elevation differences and operate effectively on inclines, cutting grass and cultivating soil where access is otherwise limited. It is particularly well-suited for use in terraced orchards and vineyards.

"The Rampetta can be used with many implements, including lawn mowers, turf strippers, sweepers, disc harrows, and grass-cutting discs," says owner Alessandro Calderoni. "Thanks to the tractor's hydraulic system, the implement can be adjusted to match the terrain's slope for optimal performance. Another advantage is the ease with which different implements can be swapped."

When mounted at the front, the operator benefits from excellent visibility and can maneuver the implement with greater precision. The Rampetta is widely used with a mini-mulcher to eliminate the need for chemical weed control near the row, even on slopes, embankments, and ridges."

"Given the urgent need to reduce chemical inputs, mechanical weed management is gaining increasing traction. While many solutions are available, it is essential to choose the one that best matches the specific needs of your orchard. The Rampetta is a versatile implement capable of both grass cutting and soil cultivation, thanks to its interchangeable components," concludes Calderoni.
