Australia captures 27% of Japan’s citrus import market

Australia has solidified its position as Japan's leading citrus import partner, holding a 27% market share in 2025, up from 20% in 2021. This steady growth highlights Australia's strong performance in a competitive and mature market. Japan is now Australia's third-largest trading partner in horticulture, with Australian exports to Japan valued at $175.6 million in 2025.

Oranges remain the most popular citrus export, making up 42% of all citrus shipments to Japan. Australian citrus export value and volume to Japan grew by 24% and 15%, respectively, over the past year, driven by improved pricing, stronger returns per unit, and a shift toward higher-value products. In addition to oranges, grapefruit, lemons, and limes have experienced substantial growth. Grapefruit exports have shown an average of 17% annual growth over five years, while lemons and limes have recorded an impressive 54% annual growth over the same period.

Australia's reputation for quality, reliability, and strong trade relationships has been a key driver of this success. To further enhance these connections, Hort Innovation has implemented a range of strategic initiatives, in-market events, and collaborative partnerships. Key events in 2025 included the "Taste of the Land Down Under in the Land of the Rising Sun" held on March 11 and the "Taste the Wonders of Australia" event on April 9, organized by the Australian Food and Wine Collaboration Group. These events featured export market roundtable discussions, food and wine workshops, and gala dinners, showcasing premium Australian produce to over 100 Japanese food and trade representatives.

The Australia-Japan Horticulture Showcase, hosted by Hort Innovation, Austrade, and the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF), was supported by Global Victoria and the Tasmanian Government. This ongoing initiative is funded by Hort Innovation Frontiers and DAFF's Showcasing Australian Horticulture Grant, with further support from the Australian Food and Wine Collaboration Group through ATMAC grants.

Japanese industry leaders who participated in a study tour of Australia in October returned for the 2025 events, gaining further insights into the quality and diversity of Australian horticultural products.

Key insights from Japan revealed that while price sensitivity among Japanese consumers has increased by 19%, their preference for quality and premium products remains strong. Australia's reputation for clean, green, and safe produce aligns well with these consumer preferences.

Japan is also seeking strong, consistent trade partnerships amidst global uncertainties. Australia's counter-seasonal production and commitment to sustainability align with Japan's strategic goals, providing opportunities for future collaboration.

Sustainability has become increasingly important in the Japanese market, offering a chance for Australia to showcase its efforts in this area. Hort Innovation encourages growers to support the "Brand Australia" image to enhance the recognition of Australian produce in Japan.

These collaborative efforts are expected to strengthen the trade relationship between Australia and Japan, creating a thriving and mutually beneficial partnership for years to come.
