Fruit trends 2024: apples, pears, and grapes down; blueberries up

In 2024, apple production in Oregon and Washington declined by 3 per cent compared to the previous year. Oregon's apple output totaled 119 million pounds, a 24 per cent drop from 2023, with a production value of $28.2 million, also down 24 per cent. Washington produced 7.18 billion pounds of apples, a 2 per cent decrease from 2023, but saw a 7 per cent increase in production value, reaching $1.95 billion.

Sweet cherry production showed mixed trends in the two states. Oregon's sweet cherry production rose 19 per cent to 45,920 tons, with a corresponding 14 per cent increase in value to $72.5 million. In contrast, Washington's sweet cherry output declined by 2 per cent to 200,970 tons, though the value surged by 50 per cent to $435 million.

Grape production in Washington fell in 2024, with total utilized output reaching 302,550 tons, an 11 per cent drop from the previous year. The overall production value was $284 million, down 8 per cent. Wine grape production was 151,050 tons, down 5 per cent from 2023, with a value of $245 million, while juice grape production totaled 151,500 tons, down 16 per cent, valued at $39.7 million—a 38 per cent decrease.

Pear production also declined. Oregon's pear production totaled 199,800 tons, down 15 per cent, though the value rose 3 per cent to $120 million. Washington produced 191,800 tons of pears, a 35 per cent decrease, with the production value falling 27 per cent to $106 million.

Blueberry production increased significantly in both states. Oregon's blueberry production totaled 165 million pounds, a 27 per cent rise, with a value of $196 million, up 34 per cent from 2023. Washington reported 207 million pounds in 2024, up 49 per cent, with a production value of $205 million, a 51 per cent increase year-over-year.
