As part of its efforts to promote research, technological development, innovation, and transfer in agricultural matters, the Ministry of Agricultural Development and Irrigation (Midagri), has made the new INIA 105 Donajus garlic variety (a high-quality genetic variety that can yield more than 14 tons per hectare in fewer months) available to producers.
The Vice-Minister of Policies and Supervision of Agricultural Development, Carmen Vegas Guerrero, delivered this new variety to producers during a ceremony at INIA's Donoso Agricultural Experimental Station (INIA) in Huaral.

"This new garlic variety represents an excellent opportunity to establish Peru as South America's leading garlic producer, surpassing Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, and Paraguay. INIA 105 Donajus is a technological varietal alternative that will improve agricultural production and economic profitability by more than 30%," the vice-minister stated.
INIA, through the National Vegetable Program, explored the collection of genetic material from the primary producing areas in Peru and conducted morphological characterization, distinguishability assessments, homogeneity tests, and stability evaluations, among other important analyses, to help develop this variety.
The fieldwork proved its effectiveness in Lima, Ancash, JunÃn, and Arequipa, as this variety had uniform yields in the inter-Andean valleys of the coast and central highlands. This favorable characteristic allows producers to increase harvest frequency, improving their income throughout the year.

It has a five-month vegetative cycle, allowing for faster growth and harvesting, optimizing times, and enabling more efficient crop rotation.
The area devoted to garlic in the 2024/2025 season is expected to reach 11,132 hectares, i.e. 27% more than in the previous season. This increase reflects that more and more producers are adopting this new variety, attracted by its productivity, quality, and competitiveness.
