Robbert de Mie, Vegimex:

"High demand for Moroccan pointed peppers"

"We currently have incredibly strong demand for our Moroccan pointed peppers," says Robbert de Mie of Vegimex in Poeldijk. "Availability in Spain is low, and the Netherlands has not yet started, so all demand is focused on Moroccan produce. Demand is particularly high from Scandinavian countries."

From their office at ABC Westland in Poeldijk, he and Willem Schrage manage the distribution of Moroccan fruits and vegetables, primarily sourced from their own crops. Throughout the year, Vegimex receives a steady supply of tomatoes, pointed peppers, block peppers, string beans, and melons from Morocco, which are then distributed across the European market.

Focus on pointed peppers
"Our cultivation partner operates 220 hectares of greenhouses in Agadir, along with significant open-field production. Initially, tomatoes were the primary crop, but we have shifted our focus to pointed peppers, which has proven to be a great decision. It allows us to truly stand out in the market."

"We supply red pointed peppers from Morocco year-round. A large portion goes directly to customers, mainly European retailers, but outside of contractual programs, we also receive fresh deliveries in Poeldijk every day," Robbert explains. "At the moment, demand is at its peak. There is a real shortage in the market, which is driving prices up. In addition to the Kapia variety, we are seeing strong demand for the Prost variety—a slightly longer type that is especially popular now that the Sweet Palermo market is tight. We will also continue supplying from Morocco throughout the summer, making it a great alternative to Dutch Palermo peppers."

Vegimex packages the pointed peppers according to customer requirements.
