India's agricultural sector has seen an expansion in exports, with Indian fruits entering Western markets and rice exports experiencing growth. The Modi government's initiative, Aatmanirbhar Bharat, has been instrumental in creating opportunities for Indian farmers, according to a senior agriculture ministry official.
India marked a milestone by exporting premium Sangola and Bhagwa pomegranates to Australia via sea, a move that reduces transport costs and enhances market access. The Bhagwa pomegranate, particularly from Maharashtra's Solapur district, is gaining traction in the U.S. market, indicating export potential.
The Modi government's GI tagging of fruits has played a role in expanding markets for Indian fruits. India's GI-tagged Purandar figs are now exported to Europe, with the first ready-to-drink fig juice reaching Poland in 2024, following a 2022 export to Germany.
In 2022, the first consignment of GI Tagged "Vazhakulam Pineapple" was sent from Kerala to Dubai and Sharjah, UAE, promoting the product globally. Additionally, India's dragon fruit, or 'Kamalam', was exported to London and Bahrain in 2021, sourced from Gujarat's Kutch region and West Midnapore in West Bengal, respectively.
The Northeast region has also benefited, with the first shipment of Burmese grapes, known as 'leteku' in Assamese, sent from Guwahati to Dubai in 2021. Germany received fresh jackfruit from Tripura the same year, marking a first for the region.
In 2021, Nagaland's 'Raja Mircha' or king chili was exported to London, showcasing India's ability to handle specialized agro-exports despite the perishable nature of the product.
