Ontario Greenhouse Vegetable Growers

Association says Ontario cucumbers are safe amid salmonella concern

The Ontario Greenhouse Vegetable Growers (OGVG) is addressing public concern following a recall of field-grown cucumbers from Florida due to salmonella risks. The association emphasizes that Ontario-grown long English cucumbers remain unaffected by this recall and are safe for consumption.

OGVG has noted discrepancies in media reporting, where images of long English cucumbers were mistakenly used in coverage of the recall, which actually pertains to field-grown cucumbers. Efforts are underway to rectify these inaccuracies with the involved media outlets. OGVG aims to reassure retailers, food service providers, and consumers about the safety and availability of Canadian-grown long English cucumbers.

Richard Lee, the executive director of OGVG, highlighted the differences between the two cucumber varieties. He stated, "Ontario greenhouse cucumbers are distinctly different from field-grown cucumbers," pointing out the physical and taste differences between them, with English cucumbers being longer, narrower, sweeter, and containing fewer seeds compared to their shorter, wider, and more bitter field-grown counterparts.
