After some difficult years for Okanagan apple growers, the BC Fruit Growers’ Association wants to return to the growth, making sure the apple sector remains part of the economy. The BCFGA received government funding to engage an independent consultant, who has come with three suggestions to try help the industry rebound.
BCFGA general manager, Glen Lucas, summed these up: “Find out that data that we were just talking about, ensure the quality standards are in place and are audited, and thirdly, do a great promotion program. Let people know to buy B.C. apples, and what’s different about them, what’s better about them, we need to get back to that — where people understand what our industry is about.”
Lucas added that the BCFGA will also be hosting workshops with local growers in January, to discuss the consultants’ suggestions, and determine if it’s the right move for the industry.
