David Levin, CEO Zohara Farms:

“In Israel we're packing and exporting figs with the help of volunteers”

Young and old volunteers have jumped in to help finish the pomegranate and are now tackling the figs harvesting and packing says David Levin, the CEO and marketing director of Zohara Farms. “The efficiency is not 100%, it’s 80% but we say so what, the pack house is at least running. It is a good thing within war time circumstances."

Zohara farms are currently exporting figs for different European retail customers. “The market is not flooded as usual as when Peru and Brazil starts. While there is not a shortage there is a window for Israeli products. We pay more for the airfreight because there are not many flights going out of Israel. Only El Al airlines is available for us. We get the space that we want, but we pay 15% more for airfreight, which off course affects the price,” states Levin.

He says his company is able to run several small pack houses some within 25 km’s of the border with the Gaza strip. “Some might wonder how during these times of war we’re running these couple of pack houses. A lot of workers left the country. In a very quick way a volunteer movement has risen up with many people from all ages. This includes high school kids, elderly people, middle aged volunteers who all come to help growers to harvest and pack. The volunteering is very well organised. Now we are able to export every day, almost like in regular times.”

He says they were able to finish the pomegranate export season during this challenging period in Israel. “We also managed to finish our pomegranate crop and marketed and exported it. It is tough times, but it shows we in Israel could prevail and keep on going and moving and marketing. We keep on selling our crop that is the power of life.”
