Sicilian peaches a point of reference for domestic markets

The harvesting of peaches and nectarines is in full swing in Sicily and the main producers report that the season is going quite well. FreshPlaza has talked about it with Angelo and Vincenzo Di Pasquale from Donnalia, a well-known brand in the stone fruit sector.

"We are currently harvesting peaches and nectarines. The campaign started in July and will continue well into October. Local producers and institutions have been producing Delia peaches from quite some time, which has recently obtained the PGI mark. It is quite a result, as it is a recognition of our hard work and investments," report the Di Pasquale brothers.

"Sicily is increasingly becoming a point of reference not just for peaches, but also for nectarines as, thanks to the extremely favorable climate, they have become a leading product on a domestic and foreign level."

"After a start characterized by small grades due to the heat waves that swept Sicily, fruits are now looking well with good grades, an excellent color and an extraordinary flavor. Yields are 15% lower than last year, but the overall quality of the fruits has benefited from this. We are pleased with the wholesale prices as they are between €1 and €2/kg: it is quite a difference, but it depends on the specific moment and the batches available."

"Our company is expanding and, for this reason, it needs to upgrade all the time. After creating the Donnalia brand, our business has grown and has penetrated the markets and big retail chains in Italy."

"That is why we needed to expand, so much so that we have built a new 3000 sq m warehouse with cold storage units and logistic services, entirely eco-friendly also thanks to a 300 Kw solar panel system. The new facility will be ready in 2024, and it will enable us to face new market challenges with our usual enthusiasm."
