A potentially devastating invasive fly that could threaten cultivation in the Niagara region is being watched by Nova Scotia grape growers, but it is not yet a big concern. The spotted lanternfly -originally from China- has shown up in northern New York state and there are concerns that it could move into Canada. The insects have been detected just across the border from Niagara Falls.
In Pennsylvania, where it first became established, quarantine zones have been established in 14 counties and vineyards have reported losses of 45 per cent to 100 per cent of some wine grape crops since 2014. The threat is broader, however, as the flies feed on over 70 plant and tree species.
