In the Netherlands, Global Producers has been receiving melons from Costa Rica several times a week since week 5. "This week, we have all the melon varieties (yellow melons, Galia, Cantaloupe, watermelons, mini watermelons - Icebox types - and SuperMinis) continuously available until week 20," says Rolf Weber.

Pafru S.A. lies in the north of Costa Rica, close to the Pacific Ocean. There, harvesting and exporting are going according to plan. However, since the beginning of the year, ship departures from Central America have been hard to calculate. That affects arrival and unloading times in the European ports. "These delays are currently the biggest problem for supplying European retailers."
"We should start getting large volumes of Central American melons from early/mid-March. These will be only for watermelons. That's because some producers have opted to grow only these. And some planting areas were hit by storms at the start of the season. But, these have been planted after all," Rolf concludes.
