At S.C. van Ravenswaaij in Veenendaal, The Netherlands, the first Ivorian mangoes have arrived by plane and boat. "On 12 of April, the Ivory Coast lifted restrictions for picking and today the first mangoes arrive by boat," said Christiaan van Ravenswaaij.
The outlook for the mango season is positive, according to the importer. "Peru is virtually off the market, which offers opportunity for the mangoes from Ivory Coast." Mali and South America currently do not have the desired volumes."
The Corona outbreak has also had an impact within the Ivory Coast, says Christiaan. "A curfew has been put in place for people, which means they work fewer hours in a day and the warehouses are not allowed to stay open. As fewer people are allowed to be in a warehouse at any one time, there will be smaller volumes this year. The harvest, however looks the same as last year."
Van Ravenswaaij carries mangoes of the NKLO and REINE brands and focuses mainly on Dutch exporters. Traditionally, the Ivorian mango season lasts five to six weeks. "Then the Ivorian season is over and it is the turn of the other West African countries."
