"The price of green oranges from Qiongzhong in Hainan began to rise in 2016 and still continues to do so. Farmers in other counties gradually begin to grow green oranges as well. The new production season began several weeks ago. The green oranges have already been on the market for more than 20 days. Although the overall production volume is growing, the price is not coming down. Instead, the price maintains a high position and even increased in comparison with last year." This is according to Chang Zhongjie, fruit farmer and trader in Hainan.

"The flavor of green oranges suffered from poor weather conditions this year and is barely passable. The purchase price of top-quality green oranges is currently around 8-10 yuan [1.14-1.42 USD] per 0.5 kg in production areas. The purchase price of green oranges in Qiongzhong is around 12 yuan [1.71 USD] per 0.5 kg. However, by the time this product reaches the customer, additional costs such as transport have driven the price up to 18-20 yuan [2.56-2.85 USD] per 0.5 kg. That is 2 yuan [0.28 USD] per 0.5 kg more than around this time last year."

The orange trees in Qiongzhong begin to show signs of old age and should be cut down, but new trees take 2-3 years to reach peak production.
