Two men fined $10,000 each for stealing avocados

Five years after they were caught stealing avocados, two Freeport men were found guilty and fined $10,000 each by a Chaguanas Magistrate.

Brian Boodram and Lathan Baksh aka "Bullhead" both of Arena Road, Freeport were charged by PC Boodramsingh of the Predial Larceny Squad. They appeared be-fore Magistrate Wendy Bally in the Chaguanas Second Magistrates Court.

The court heard that on July 17th 2014 around 3:15 pm, the officers were on mobile patrol along Rodney Road, Freeport, when they were alerted by a farmer that some men were seen entering an agricultural farm.

According to guardian.co.tt, the officers quickly responded and upon entering the land, found Boodram and Baksh on the compound with 231 avocados in their possession. The avocados were valued at $2,310. They both pleaded not guilty but after a five-year trial, they were found guilty by Magistrate Bally and fined $10,000 each. In default, they will each serve nine months of hard labour.
