According to estimates, 15% of the production of Tamaulipas' oranges might not be marketed due to the invasion of oranges from Veracruz in the market of the northeast of the country, the president of the Union of Citricultors of the center of the state, Javier Ibarra Echartea, stated.
He also said that 90% of the orange from Veracruz continued to pass to Tamaulipas without any controls, which has caused the prices of the product from Tamaulipas to stagnate.
The orange from Veracruz is much cheaper than the local product because the producers of that state don't invest much in the orchards and Tamaulipas does have a modernized citrus farmers, "we irrigate, fertilize, and conduct health practices," he said.
He stressed that although the product from Tamaulipas is more expensive, it is also of a higher quality, and to be affordable, it has to be sold at a price of at least 1,500 pesos per ton.
"Right now it costs 1,100 to 1,200 pesos, which is really low because a year ago we were selling it for 2,000 to 2,500 pesos," he stated.
