The first Washington Sanguine oranges from the Moroccan Gharb region have arrived at Wilko Fruit in Breda. "These are the best pressing oranges available," says Wilko van der Zwaard enthusiastically. "A lot of people confuse this variety with a blood orange, but it really is a pressing orange with a strikingly high brix (14)."
"Salustiana-like varieties often turn sour when they're left to rest. You don't have this with the Washington Sanguine. If they've been sitting for a week, they still aren't sour. The real 'press lovers' are therefore charmed by this orange. We have these Washington Sanguine come in in nice Gaudias boxes and have a wide customer base for them, varying from supermarkets, wholesalers to market stall holders. The season will run for another two months at least," says Wilko.
"The demand is immediately very good. Our customer have good memories of the Washington Sanguine. This really is the new trend in the pressing orange world," laughs the importer. "We will also receive Valencia Late in mid March from the Gharb. The Gharb is the region in Morocco with the most water, and combined with a good soil type and the large difference in day and night temperatures, it creates the ideal orange with a good colour and brix, a box of which often weighs more than a kilo more than the oranges from other regions."
"We also receive a full supply of Nadorcott mandarins from Morocco, which we carry in the brands Gaudias and Le Domaine. The volumes are slightly lower this year and the sizes are slightly smaller, but these are often the tastiest mandarins. "The season will run until the start of May. We offer the mandarins in 10, 12 and 15 kg cartons and pitufos," according to Wilko. "Although the citrus supply is large from Spain and Morocco, among other, the experts know where to find the right varieties."
