This year, Honduras will export some 35 metric tons of citrus fruits worth more than 11 million dollars or 265 million lempiras, at the current exchange rate.
There are around 20 thousand hectares of citrus in the country, 18 thousand of which are devoted to orange crops and 1,200 of lemon and mandarins. This export item depends on international prices, just as with other agricultural and agro-industrial products.
Rene Arturo Bendaña, a businessman from the sector, said that they exported Persian Limes to the Spanish market and that they expected to export to Canada one to three containers per month, equivalent to 100 tons.
The orange is exported to Central American area, such as Mexico, the Islands of Martinique and Guadeloupe, and the country plans to make shipments to the European market. Thanks to its geographical position, Honduras has the ideal climate to promote citriculture.
