In 2018, pineapples displaced bananas as the main agricultural export product of Costa Rica, according to data released today by the Ministry of Foreign Trade and the Foreign Trade Promoter (Procomer).
Last year, pineapple sales abroad exceeded 990 million dollars, i.e. five percent more than in 2017, while banana sales amounted to 981 million dollars, which is nine percent lower than in the previous year.
At a press conference, the manager of Procomer, Pedro Beirute, said that "Costa Rica's pineapple is recognized as the best in the world. Costa Rica is the main exporter of this fruit."
Even though the banana achieved better prices in the market, he said, its production was lower due to weather problems in the past two years, while the pineapple benefited from a greater sale of fresh produce and less juice and concentrates.
