Greenhouse peppers see thinner supplies for now

Supplies of greenhouse peppers are currently sitting on the shorter side, but that’s as expected. “Production locally is following a normal cycle and historically at this time of year we see some elevated markets on greenhouse grown peppers,” says Jimmy Coppola of Westmoreland-Topline Farms based in Leamington, Ont.



Coppola adds that supplies of greenhouse peppers at this time of year are coming out of several countries including Canada, the USA, Mexico and the Netherlands. “But we are seeing some lower than normal volumes coming out of the other growing regions which is more than likely caused by weather,” he says. “This is keeping the market elevated from where we would typically see it this time a year.”



Supplies to shift
Coppola also adds that with other growing regions start coming back in and supplies of greenhouse peppers increase and demand stay steady or possibly even dropping slightly, Westmoreland-Topline anticipates the market to level off somewhat. That said, Coppola says its sees consumption of greenhouse peppers continue to grow as consumers further adopt healthier eating habits.

Aside from greenhouse peppers, Westmoreland-Topline also continues to put emphasis on its new sanZano, a long “San Marzano” style of gourmet greenhouse roma tomato and has plans to increase acreage on the commodity next season. San Marzano tomatoes are often the preferred tomato for cooks and are a variety of tomato enjoying increased attention from consumers.
