Seedless table grapes - an 'artificial product'?

Table grapes are a popular summer time snack. They are available year-round and starting from July are mainly coming from Europe. For Germany the most important supplier is Italy. But even more important than the origin, for many consumers, is the question: are the seeds okay? Kids in particular are often fussy with regard to seeds. That means consumers have to look carefully at the point of sale. But why do some grapes have cores and others do not? Were there seedless varieties already in the past?

In nature there have always been grapes without seeds. Some varieties have larger proportions of seedless berries than others. In those cases there was no fertilization between male and female plant parts. In the end, through grower selection the seedless property would be enlarged.

Raisins, sultanas or currants?
Seedless varieties are -for example- the "Korinthiaki" and "Sultana". The latter is also known as the "Thompson Seedless" and it is the world 's most important seedless table grape. Out of these are made the "sultanas" or "currants"; dried raisins.

In addition to perfect seedless grapes, there are those that have only very small and soft seeds, hardly felt when eaten. In the trade these grapes are usually offered as "seedless" as well.

Seedless and big: Only with natural hormones

Without specific treatment, all seedless grape varieties mostly form relatively small berries because they are missing the necessary plant growth hormone that is formed in the seeds. Should the seedless varieties form large berries, then in the growth phase they are sprayed with plant hormones. These completely harmless plant hormones are a natural substance, essential for the growth process.

Other effects: the stems will be stronger, the berries are not clustered so tightly and they are more resistent to fungal diseases.
