The Hainan Department for Agriculture announced that the surface area devoted to mango plantation in Hainan this year covered 54 thousand hectares and annual production exceeded 1 million tons, which is an increase of 20%-30% in comparison with last year. In other words, Hainan's mangoes enjoyed a bumper harvest this year.
The weather was relatively cold last year, which delayed this year's Hainan mango arrival on the market by 10-45 days. Hainan's mangoes entered the market together with tropical fruit from Guangdong, Yunnan, and Fujian because of the cold weather. Hainan mangoes had difficulty standing out in this crowded market and were forced to "lower their social status". In other words, the price of Hainan mangoes was lowered to compete with other tropical fruits in a crowded market. By comparison, the price of Tainong mangoes went down to 1 yuan [0.15 USD] per 0.5 kg, which is far below the 3 yuan [0.45 USD] per 0.5 kg of last year.
