The Netherlands re-export figs to Scandinavia

While the harvesting of fioroni figs is later in Ruvo di Puglia (late June-early July), operations started a week ago in Molfetta and Giovinazzo. "It's because they are closer to the sea. We're processing around 10 tons of produce a day, 65-70% of which is destined abroad," explain Cantatore Fruit Company managers.

"We have introduced a new 'mmm... Fichissimo' branded crate. It's smaller, measuring 30x40 with 3 kg (photo above). In addition, demand has been livelier especially abroad and mainly in France, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium. The Dutch also re-export to Scandinavia. In case of long transfers, however, the ripening level must be suitable, otherwise the fruit arrives at destination overripe."

Feedback in France and Germany is good for Italian fioroni figs, as grades are bigger compared to the Spanish or Turkish product and the flavour is better. "Italian figs can weigh over 300 or 400 grams, while foreign figs are smaller."

According to the managers, the Italian market is rather slow. "The seasons of different products such as cherries are ending, and figs still have to find their slot."

This year too, figs are packaged in stone paper, which is water resistant and biodegradable.

The season will end in late August. "Demand is lively in August, especially around the 15th."
