Malaysia: Mandarin oranges costly this Chinese New Year

Mandarin oranges are costly this Chinese New Year due to a poor harvest in China. However, according to the Sibu Grocery Dealers Association chairman Yeo Keng Teck, they are still cheaper than those sold last year. “Fortunately, our Malaysian Ringgit is stronger against the US dollar, which cushions the impact,” he told reporters recently.

Yeo, who is also the Chinese Section secretary of the Sibu Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCCI), told The Borneo Post mandarin oranges were costlier last year due to the strong US currency. He said he was importing fewer mandarin oranges this year, just like his colleague wholesalers. “I don’t dare order bigger quantities this year, looking at the people’s disposable incomes. After the Chinese New Year, there will be no more demand for the oranges.”
