Global Plant Genetics inks deal to commercialize new blackberry variety

Berry licensing company, Global Plant Genetics, has just signed a deal with North Carolina State University to commercialize the blackberry variety, Von.

The contract will allow the U.K.-based company to sub-license Von in all territories across the world other than the U.S. and Europe.

The blackberry variety is already performing well in commercial production and trial sites in a range of countries. Von has a number of important aspects that make it of real interest to blackberry growers.

β€œVon has exceptional fruit quality through a combination of high sweetness, low acid and impressive shelf-life,” said Jamie Petchell of Global Plant Genetics.” It is best adapted to production in mid-chill areas and has a mid-late harvest season, making it ideal for season extension.”

The company has already started negotiations with several companies across four continents and expects the first plants to move in the coming months.
