Ukraine: Watermelon imports grow 13-fold

The decline in production and the high domestic prices have caused the import of melons and watermelons into Ukraine to reach the highest levels since the country's independence. This was reported by APK-Inform: Vegetables and Fruits citing official data.

So, for the first 9 months of 2017, Ukraine purchased 650 tonnes of melons on the foreign market, which is 3.5 times more than in January-September of the previous year. At the same time, imports of watermelons grew 13-fold. During the period at hand, 958 tonnes of this product were imported into the Ukrainian market, compared to just 74 tonnes in the first 9 months of 2016.

According to APK-Inform analysts, this significant increase in the supply is the consequence of a significant decline in the country's melon production due to anomalous heat in the second half of the summer. Furthermore, the growth of imports has also been a result of the unprecedentedly high prices for melons in Ukrainian farms. It is worth recalling that this product has rapidly become more expensive since the beginning of August. As a result, by the end of the summer, prices reached record levels. Ukrainian growers have been selling watermelons for prices 6.3 times more expensive than a year earlier.
