According to The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (MAFRA) and Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation (aT), two containers full of pears were shipped to Brazil from Korea for the first time.
One on September 26 (from Ulsan Horticulture Cooperative Union) and the other on October 11 (from Naju Pear Farming Cooperative Union).
Previously, there had been no export of fresh fruit from Korea to South America due to high logistics costs, such as long-distance transportation and complex customs clearance procedures.
The achievement raises hopes that exports of pears, which are currently limited to Taiwan and the US, can be expanded to other markets. It is also possible that other fresh fruit from Korea can reach South America.
Baek Jin-seok, Food Export Director of aT, said, “This success is significant in its contribution to creating new markets for farmers having a hard time because of overproduction.”
He added, “We will do our best to secure a firm position for Korean pears in the local market through promotions and sales events at large supermarkets. Starting with Brazil, we will work on expanding the market further to Peru, Mexico, and other countries in Central and South America.”
