Hungary: 10% rise in apple prices

"The price of vegetables in Hungary has remained mostly stable, despite some fluctuations, although the same can't be said about fruits," stated Mr Ledó Ferenc, of the Hungarian Fruit and Vegetable Interprofessional Organization and Product Board (FruitVeb).

In particular, the price of sour cherries and sweet cherries went up right at the beginning of the season, mainly as a result of the impact of spring frosts, which caused significant losses in the production across Europe. Apricots, peaches and plums escaped this destruction, so prices have only slightly increased.

However, apples are on average more than 10% more expensive this year, which is due in part to the fact that Poland harvested fewer than 2.6 million tonnes, instead of the average 4.2-4.3 million tonnes. More specifically, the price of apples for processing grew in Hungary, and if last year's stocks are depleted, this may also lead to rises in the price of processed products.

On average, Hungarians eat an average of 15 to 18 kilograms of apples a year.
