Michel Schrijnemaekers, Fruitveiling Zuid-Limburg:
"Junami apple the most affected"
Now that the season of the summer apples is almost over, the Elstar season has started at Fruitveiling Zuid-Limburg. Today it was followed by the first Conference pears. "It will be a changing top fruit year, in which one variety will be distinctly better off than the next," expects director Michel Schrijnemaekers.
"The night frost has left its traces in the Zuid-Limburg fruit cultivation this spring. We weren't able to irrigate on many plots and this has caused a significant harvest reduction in certain varieties. The Junami apple is most affected here, but the Jonagold varieties were also heavily hit. The situation for the rest of the apples is very varied, depending on their location. Some plots of Elstar are nice and full, there are also those that have less than half a harvest. The pears have been the best off," says Michel.
"There will be considerably less apples, so I won't be surprised if the apple prices are a lot higher than in recent years. What is important is that the harvest in the German Rheinland - an important competitor for us - and in Bodensee is very low. Only the north of Germany is reporting a good harvest. The harvest is also very average for pears and I expect reasonable prices, especially for coarse pears. I hear a lot of growers complaining that the size is lacking and this will likely result in a considerable price difference between the sortings."
Last week dissatisfied Junami growers meet in a crisis meeting to talk about the future of this club variety. "I've read about it too, but wasn't there myself and I don't know if our growers were. We haven't spoken about it within Inova over the holidays, but we will soon," expects Michel.
