Italy: Drought and heat affect table grapes

"We intentionally started our table grape campaign one week ago. Temperatures during the first 15 days of August were in fact so high that we could not harvest. In addition, the market was slow with low prices. Luckily our decision paid off as, afterwards, quotations increased at least for the Victoria variety. Quality is spectacular but unfortunately yields are scarce," explains Teresa Diomede, owner of Racemus in Rutigliano (BA), APOC member and Uvitaly certified.

Drought is affecting all producers and plants, which are registering a 25-30% drop in production. Ripening is around 20 days early.

Temperatures continue to be high after a short break mid-month and producers hope they won't exceed 40°C again, "making harvesting difficult for both operators and produce, which needs to be transferred to the warehouse right away. Drought and the heat also have an effect during the post-harvest period."

But although prices have somewhat recovered for the Victoria variety, also thanks to the low volumes, the same cannot be said of the Crimson and Red Globe varieties. Racemus started harvesting Red Globe grapes a few days ago.

"It's normal for commercialisation to slow down at the end of the summer holidays, but it should pick up as schools open and temperatures drop. My expectations are positive for September: quality is high and the rest should follow, including prices, which should be kept high as the campaign was difficult and pricey."

"Foreign grapes are always available on the market, so all we can do is keep up quality, services offered and logistics high. After all, Spain is dealing with our same problems."
