"A survey conducted in Puglia showed a potential mutation of the Victoria cultivar. We compared this accession with standard Victoria regarding some amphelographic traits. All characteristics were very similar to traditional grapes except the shape of the berries, which was more oblong," explain researchers from the Universities of Bari and Foggia.
Left to right: standard Victoria and Victoria with oblong berries.
The molecular characterisation with 25 SSR markers showed that standard and mutated Victoria are genetically identical for all analysed loci, thus suggesting that the two accessions could be considered clones, with the difference in shape probably due to somatic mutation.
"This mutation of the Victoria cultivar could be interesting for the market as consumers are always attracted by different shapes and colours. They shop with their eyes, so this accession could be an alternative clone to the standard Victoria variety."
