South-East France:

Gala apple crop not optimal

The frost experienced in Europe earlier this year was not a problem for French company Cofruid ‘Oc, with regards to their apples. The hot weather of late has, however, affected the apple production, in particular the early Gala crops.

According to Philippe Jean from Cofruid ‘Oc, their producers, in the South-East of France, have only harvested 1,500 tonnes of this variety. “This is less than expected”, he says. The heat will have an impact on fruit evolution and, in order to avoid any storage damage, Cofruid’Oc decided to use Smartfresh on a majority of the crop.

He is, however, confident that they will have a good season since there is an overall lack of fruit in Europe this season. Philippe is also cautiously optimistic about their later varieties, the Granny Smith and the Pink Lady®. He is more confident about their storage quality.
