Spain: Strawberry price rose by 12.3% in recently finished campaign

Prices during the 2016/2017 strawberry campaign, which finished last June, increased on average by 12.3 percent compared to the previous two seasons, reaching 1.18 Euro per kilo; the second highest price of the last decade, only behind 2010/2011, when it stood at 1.20 Euro/kilo.

This last campaign came to a close with a production totalling 302,500 tonnes, with two very well differentiated periods, according to a report from the Council of Agriculture, Fisheries and Rural Development of Andalusia.

During the first period, lasting between December and the first week of March, prices were well above those of the previous season, although the volume sold was much lower, down by about 25%.

In the second period, from week 11 onwards, which constitutes the peak of the campaign, both the average prices at origin and the production volume were similar to those recorded in the two previous campaigns.

There were also varying price increases depending on the packaging format. The standard format (250 gram, 500 gram, 1 kilo or 2 kilos), which is the most common, reached an average price of 1.14 Euro/kilo; while the strawberries packaged in special formats reached an average price 57% higher than in the previous campaign, namely 1.79 Euro/kilo.
