Virginia forecast shows strong growth in apples, grapes & peaches

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services released information collected by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Agriculture Statistics Service on Wednesday which shows strong growth in apple, grape and peach crops.

According to a release, the commercial apple production for Virginia is forecast to reach 220 million pounds this year, which is up 22 percent, or about 40 million pounds, from 2016.

For grapes, the Virginia season is expected to produce 9,000 tons, up six percent, or 500 tons, from last season.

Virginia's peaches are expected to be way up compared to 2016, increasing 54 percent. The release says the production is forecast to reach 6,000 tons, about 2,100 tons more than last year.
