"In Poland, 29% fewer apples are expected than last year. In Belgium this decrease is expected to be as much 68%. This could mean an increased interest in our Jonagold apples. In addition, there are 31% lower harvests of Elstar apples throughout the EU. This is important for the Dutch and German fruit sectors, in particular. They are already seeing a lot of interest in their apples, which drives sales. The prices for apples still on the tree are already 20 cents higher than last season", says Leonard.
"The mood in the apple market, which has been going for about for weeks, is good. It remains to be seen what damage the frost did to the pear crops. There will be a demand for high quality pears this season. Last season the pear market was bad until mid-February, after which it improved. I expect the prices will immediately reach the same level they were at from mid-January", Leonard concludes.
