Taco van der Louw, fruit and vegetable specialist within FreshRecruitment:

"Professionalisation of fruit and vegetable sector demands a different type of candidate more often"

Taco van der Louw has been active in the fruit and vegetable sector for over 20 years. Starting as an agronomist he gradually shifted into more commercial functions in the international fresh produce sector over the years. Now he is active as an independent for the first time and matches companies and candidates for Fresh Recruitment. "Our main goal isn't to tie the most clients to ourselves, but to build intensive sustainable relationships with with customers and candidates to realise the successful filling of positions together."

Various recruiters work independently within FreshRecruitment, in which each has their own speciality in the food sector. "We take care of the entire process from assignment to hiring and selection, from A to Z. Everyone brings there own network, knowledge and experience to the table. That's the entire fruit and vegetable sector for me. Organic growth, from seeding to harvest, from production to marketing. This natural process feeds my personal drive and interest," says Taco, who started as a recruiter in June. "We really research what a candidate is made of and whether they fit into the company. Candidates are also increasingly looking at the 'work life balance' that the company offers. I think it's great to help both the candidate and the company. Today's candidate can be tomorrow's customer."

FreshRecruitment's method is that the vacancy is examined first and a labour market communication plan is made. Then they search within their own network and social media for the right candidate, personal interviews, an assessment and the selection take place. "An extensive database, access to different networks and making good use of social media make it possible to make a good quality first selection. We use a lot of databases and social media like LinkedIn, Xing and Facebook. You can see that our sector often still uses card trays, but we believe it can be done better," says Taco.

"The fruit and vegetable sector is different in the area of HRM. People are very set in their ways. Many companies like to fill in their own vacancies - which can be done - but at the same time you can see a move towards professionalisation, mostly driven by retail customers, in which a different type of candidate is sometimes needed. In certain cases it is an advantage that a candidate is from a different sector. We have a wide scope with our network," says Taco.

"We specifically focus on the HBO+ vacancies for bachelors and masters. We mainly focus on companies in the Netherlands and Belgium. But if international companies are looking for a Dutch candidate, we would love to help them. I am also well known on the British market thanks to my experience there with Greenery UK, among others. You notice the economy is tightening, so there is enough movement in the market. There are also more vacancies in the fruit and vegetable sector, particularly in the areas commercial and quality," says Taco. The FreshRecruitment flyer promises companies their desired candidate within 4-6 weeks with 100% quality guarantee. "A bold statement," the recruiter laughs. "But it is our goal."
