Cristian Morales, Where Is My Fruit
"Spain: "The Middle East is no longer an attractive market"
In recent years, many Spanish companies have thought of the countries of the Middle East as their main market, as is the case of Where Is My Fruit. This company was shipping 70% of its goods to those destinations, exporting the rest to Canada or South East Asia, among others. With the passage of time, "we have seen ourselves competing against too many importers in Dubai, and furthermore, they buy on consignment, which is very risky, given that it is an overseas market," explains Cristian Morales.
Also, the representative of Where Is My Fruit commented that "many companies have suffered financial problems and always paid late." Details such as this have resulted in the marketed volume being considerably reduced, "not only the demand, but also the supply." Thus, the new strategy, "which we consider the most reasonable," is to diversify markets and try to be present in more places. In this sense, "Canada has served to compensate a lot in winter as far as citrus fruits are concerned."
The summer months are especially difficult for overseas shipping, since the goods transported are more sensitive. According to Where Is My Fruit, it is at this time when you have to be more careful with the possible claims for damages in the fruit. "There comes a time when you have to know when to stop and prioritise the export of quality over volume. In the end, it is preferable to ship 15 or 20 containers and prevent the arrival of fruit in poor condition than load 50 containers and have quality problems with 20."
