The Turkish Minister of Customs and Trade, Bülent Tüfenkci, announced that the famous Malatya apricot will be sold in the European market under the label of a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI).
In a statement, the Ministry of Customs and Trade said that Turkey has finally received the PGI certification for the Malatya apricot after a three year wait, adding that Malatya apricots have become the second product certified by the EU, after Aydın figs.
Tüfenkci stressed how extremely important the PGI is, adding that the first function of the label is the product's protection and the second its presentation and marketing. He also reported that the certification of its apricots is a welcome development for the Malatya province.
The province of Malatya and its districts, the districts of Baskil in Elazığ, Gürün in Sivas, Gölbaşı in Adıyaman and Elbistan in Kahramanmaraş were determined as the geographical boundaries in the certification document, which also describes the particularities of both fresh and dried fruits. Moreover, the Hacıhaliloğlu, Hasanbey, Kabaaşı, Soğancı, Çataloğlu and Çöloğlu were designated as apricot species of Malatya.
