A Thai delegation has recently visited the Jerte valley, in Extremadura, with the goal of learning how to combat pests and observe the growing process of the cherries.
According to the Government of Extremadura, this visit is considered necessary to prepare and sign a pest management protocol, which would allow the export of cherries to Thailand. The opening of this market is a demand of the sector on which the Government has been working for several years.
The Thai delegation, made up of specialists in plant pests, has been accompanied by technicians from the Council of the Environment and Rural Issues, Agricultural Policies and Territory and by technicians from the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food and Environment.
The program of the visit has included visits to horticultural centres and cherry farms, where the delegation has been shown the systems for pest management, fruit traceability and for the selection, packaging and preservation of cherries.
The delegation has also held a meeting with technicians of the General Directorate of Agriculture and Livestock, who presented the system for the prevention and control of pests and diseases of cherries in Extremadura, as well as the inspection processes required for the issuance of export certificates for the fruit.
