AU: Crimson seedless grape growers warned of possible oversupply

According to a recent report from Horticulture Innovation Australia the grape industry is at risk of seeing an oversupply of crimson seedless grapes after more table grape growers were expanding operations of the variety.

The table grape industry’s strategic investment report, which Horticulture Innovation Australia uses as the foundation for levy investment decisions said this created a “high risk” of oversupplying the market and a lack of industry data was to blame.

It said the minimal data available was due to a lack of trust among growers when it came to sharing basic information such as plantings per variety, annual production, expected yield rate and prices.

“Without the necessary intelligence there is a high risk in the future of an oversupply of this variety (crimson seedless) while neglecting to build capacity to supply other varieties,” the report said.

“Unlike other horticulture industries where a few players produce the most, the greater part of table grape production is spread across many small to medium-sized growers.

“It is essential for the industry to build its data intelligence to help the whole of industry and individual growers make well-informed decisions.”
