Mexico: Sonora exports 800,000 cases of grapes per day

The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Hydraulic Resources, Fisheries and Food (Sagarpha) said that during this season 21 million boxes of grapes had been exported to different markets.

In this regard, the head of the unit, Julio Cesar Corona Valenzuela, said that about 21 million boxes were placed in the national and international markets, which allowed a record amount of table grapes to cross the borders of Sonora.

He said the market and prices registered had been good, and that based on the high border crossings they had marketed up to 800 thousand boxes per day.

He emphasized that there had been no collapse in prices, as producers had coordinated the placement of grapes on the basis of contracts with commercial chains.

This, he added, was quite a good year for grape growers in Sonora, especially when there has been a large expansion in more than 30 markets for the placement of the state grape.

Corona Valenzuela said that there were about 16 thousand hectares of table grapes in Sonora this year, which were established to sell to the national market and to export to the United States, and Europe, where they are worth three billion dollars.
