China: Boat people fish all kinds of melons out of river

Because of the continuous rainfall of the past few days, many areas in Southern China are flooded. The water level has gone up, causing rivers to overflow and streets to be flooded. That is why some residents go fishing in the streets. The flood has taken all kinds of melons from the farmers' lands, so the boat people are finding large quantities of watermelons, white gourds and pumpkins in the river.

Pictures of 4 July of Mr. Jiang, one of the boat people, in Tianxingzhou in Wuhan by the riverside where he found a white gourd.

Mr. Jiang explains that he is from Fuyang in Anhui. He works in water transport all year round. This time, his destination was Yueyang in Hunan, but yesterday evening around 8 o'clock, after he had reached Wuhan, the current was too strong because of the flood, so he decided to moor his boat for the time being.

People are both fishing and eating

"The white gourd that I found was over ten kilos, when they usually are only five," Mr. Jiang says. He cuts open a watermelon he's just found and tastes it, to see if its time in the water has influenced its taste.
