First German blackberries ready to hit supermarkets

The first volumes of German Driscoll´s blackberries are finding their way to the supermarkets. Also, according to the company, the German raspberry production is growing tremendously. This progress is the result of a cooperation between farmers Marc van Steenoven, Leo Pelzer and Karl-Heinz Ricken, who are located in the Rhein-Ruhr and Spreewald regions and strongly believe in local-for-local production for Driscoll’s.

Teun Leenders, responsible for the German operations, says, “Consumers are finding it more and more important to know what the origin of their food is. Especially Northern European consumers have a lot of trust in locally produced vegetables and fruits, as it reminds them of joyful memories from their childhood."

"The next generation of German growers is very keen to work with us because of our high performing varieties, such as Driscoll's Maravilla and Driscoll’s Victoria. Through this cooperation we aim to enlarge our German berry production in the coming years.”

Dutch grower Marc van Steenoven has also recently started to produce in Germany.

“The country has an ideal climate to grow berries, at the same time there is still a lot of opportunity left within the market. Consumers are looking for distinctive, high quality berries that are unique in flavour, appearance and condition,” Marc said.
